Founded in the year 1985 by Mrs. Savithri Vaithi and Mr. Soundarrajan, SST Sai Charan was set up with an aim to provide affordable care to pensioners on a Not-for-profit basis.
Mrs. Savithri Vaithi, a visionary and the city’s doyen of social work, established Chennai’s first home for destitute women – Vishranthi Old Age Home. She was the founder president of the Monday Charity Club and started the Vishranthi Old Age Home under its aegis to address the rising concerns of abandoned women. With her experience in running Vishranthi, she set up Samaya Sweekruta Trust (SST) so as to provide affordable care with dignity for pensioners.
Sai Charan was formed in 1985 with seven trustees on the Board. Mr. R. Devarajan a Ret. Special Director-Personnel, Union Motors Group of Companies, initially assisted the establishment in an advisory capacity, and subsequently, ably headed the Trust. It has grown from strength to strength thanks to the association of persons like Mrs. Sundari Jayaraman and Mrs. Kamala Sampath .
SST Sai Charan was started in a small manner in a rented premises initially. With generous resources made available by Ms. Savithri Vaithi and her well-wishers, it moved to the current premises at Sholinganallur in 2004. This shift was made possible by the contributions made by Ms.Sathyabama and Mr. Challam Kashyap, by way of land and assets. Mr.R.Devarajan, played a key role in all the transitions. Currently, the Board of Management with senior retired executives and professionals, who are like-minded, compassionate and empathetic, as its Trustees, provides the operational and administrative support. They bring their passion and selfless service to ensure comfort to the elderly persons in Sai Charan.
